Post Graduate Diploma in Bamboo Cultivation & Resource Utilization SEMESTER-I THEORY PAPER-101 (Bamboo Biodiversity and Resources)
Total Marks - 100 (Theory - 80, Internal assessment - 20)

With the conclusion of final examination on 19th September 2011 first batch of Bamboo Cultivation and resource utilization was completed. The first semester was conducted at Tripura University and the second semester at BCDI. In this one year diploma course student get theoretical and practical knowledge for production to consumption of bamboos. During the project work students had undertaken important aspects of bamboo and its utilization under following topics:

Group A

  1 Geographical distribution of bamboo in India with special reference to its biodiversity in the north east region.
  2 Geographical Information System (GIS): Basic Principles of GIS: History of GIS; GIS objectives; Basic components of GIS: Hardware, Software, Data, People and Methods; Information domain: spatial and Non-spatial; Data Models: Vector Data Model and Raster Data Model; Data products, Data layers coverage and Entry; Attribute data attachment; Query and analysis; Spatial analysis: Creating a thematic map.
  3 Bamboo anatomy.

  Group B

  1 Taxonomy of Bamboo: Identification and characterization.
  2 Concept of priority species and selection criteria.
  3 Ecological function of bamboo and its role in soil and water conservation.
  4 Exotic species introduction and its role in bamboo economy.
     

 PAPER-102(Bamboo Propagation and conservation) Total Marks – 100 (Theory - 80; Internal assessment)

     

 Group-A

  1  Propagation of bamboo: Cutting techniques of Culm, suchker and rhizomes. Vegetative Multiplication Centre (VMC).
  2  Nursery bed preparation, sapling establishment and transplantation technique, plantation strategy, field evaluation.
  3  Fertilizer: Role of fertilizer and irrigation
     

 Group-B

  1  Concept of Tissue Culture, infrastructure facilities, micro-propagation technique. macro- proliferation.
  2  Concept of Green house, Net house and Poly house and their utility.
  3  Bamboo breeding and Cytogenetics.
  4  Conservation Strategies.
     

 PAPER-103 (Bamboo Management and Utilization) Total Mark: 100 (Theory - 80; Internal assessment - 20)

     

 Group-A

  1  Introduction to forest policy, National and state policies for Bamboo. Significance of Joint Forest Management.
  2  Disease and disorders of bamboo and management.
  3  Sustainable Harvesting Management, Post harvest practices-means measures.

 Group-B

  1  Bamboo as a source of food-indigenous and oriental recepies.
  2  Biotechnical aspect of nutritive and functions of bamboo shoot.
  3  Processing Technology for storage of fresh bamboo shoots; preservation techniques, storage of fresh bamboo shoots with and without water, Microbiology of stored shoots, organoleptic studies, physiology and biochemical changes of fresh – cut bamboo shoots during cold storage, effect of storage on water content, pH & Hydrogen cyanide content.
  4  Traditional and laboratory fermentation techniques of bamboo shoots.
     

 SEMESTER-I PRACTICAL PAPER-104 (BASED ON PAPER - 101, 102 & 103) Marks - 100 (Internal assessment – 20 + Final exam. -80)

     

 Pracrtical / Exercises:

  1  Morphological characterization of bamboo culm and shoots, identification upto species level.
  2  Bamboo incense stick preparation.
  3  Bamboo design and drawing.
  4  Demonstration of operational techniques.
     

 SEMESTER-II THEORY PAPER-201 (Bamboo Technology) Total Marks: 100 (Theory - 80; Internal assessment - 20)

     

 Group-A:

  1  Bamboo machineries and its uses. Description of hand tools. Specification of tools and types of tools. Maintenance of all tools and machineries.
  2  Description of cross cutting machine, operational and trouble shooting aspect of this machine.
  3  Description of Radial splitting machine, automatic splitter machine, operational and trouble shooting aspect of this machine.
  4  Description of Knot removing machine, operational and trouble shooting aspect of this machine.
  5  Description of Polishing machine, operational and trouble shooting aspect of this machine.
     

 Group-B:

  1  Description and operational aspect of manual Slivering machine, Advantage and disadvantage.
  2  Description of Round Stick making machine, Operational aspect, Advantage and disadvantage.
  3  Description of Electric drill machine, how to operate trouble shooting of this machine.
  4  Description of machine Planner, operation and trouble shooting of this machine.
  5  Description of machine Saw and how to operate trouble shooting of this machine.
     

 PAPER-202 (Bamboo design and product development) Total Marks: 100 (Theory - 80; Internal assessment - 20)

     

 Group-A:

  1  Design and design methodology.
  2  Different types of Joints and applications.
  3  Buffing, Polishing and bamboo dying.
  4  Value addition on bamboo craft.
 

 Group-B:

  1  Bamboo pulp in paper industry.
  2  Bamboo as weaving material, furniture and handicraft.
  3  Bamboo incense sticks making and production. Bamboo as a source of charcoal. Bamboo mat board, corrugated sheets, Flattened board, bamboo – jute composite and bamboo flooring.
  4  Bamboo marketing and entrepreneurship.
     

 SEMESTER-II PRACTICAL Paper – 203 (Based on Paper – 201 & 202) Total Marks: 100 (Theory - 80; Internal assessment - 20)

     

 Practical/Exercises:

  1  Joints making.
  2  Bamboo incense stick preparation.
  3  Bamboo design and drawing.
  4  Demonstration of operational techniques.
  5  Sliver making.
     

 PAPER-204 (Workshop paper) Total Marks: 100 (Theory - 80; Internal assessment - 20)

     
  1  Submission of project work on bamboo.
  2  Preparation of finished products.
