B.C.D.I. ORGANISED ONE DAY AWARENESS WORKSHOP FOR STUDENTS
A one day biodiversity awareness programme for school students of West Tripura, “Know Your Biodiversity – Know The Bamboo Resources Of Tripura” was jointly organised by B.C.D.I. Agartala, and Directorate Of Biotechnology, Govt. Of Tripura on 27th dec 2010 in the premises of B.C.D.I.
The Workshop was attended by more than Sixty students and teachers from five different schools of West Tripura, namely Ram Nagar Higher Secondary School, Sukhmoy Higher Secondary School, Bodhjung Girls Higher Secondary School, Abhoynagar N.S. Vidyalaya and Nandan Nagar Higher Secondary School. Similar workshops are being planned for students from other three districts of Tripura where students and teachers can be made aware about developments in bamboo sector and develop an aptitude towards a career in bamboo sector.
The workshop was inaugurated by Minister for Science Technology and Environment Shri Joy Govinda Deb in presence of Principal Secretary Shri N.C. Sinha, Director School Education Shri Sahdeb Das and Director State D.B.T Shri B. Chakraborti. Dr. Abhinav Kant, In-Charge B.C.D.I. extended a warm welcome to all the visitors by way of a well crafted welcome speech. The Minister Science Technology and Environment, Joy Govinda Deb, while highlighting the need for Biodiversity awareness among the students, applauded the work done by B.C.D.I. in Bamboo sector.
The technical sessions in the workshop involved a visit to bambusetum for introduction to different bamboo species of Tripura, propagation techniques for bamboo and its application, need of bamboo cultivation and its economics, demonstration of different bamboo processing machines at B.C.D.I, exposure to latest design and products of bamboo and career opportunities in bamboo sector. Dr. Abhinav Kant detailed the participants about various aspects of bamboo species, propagation and plantation. While Shri. Bhanwar Singh Kirar ably assisted by Shri Ramavtar Narvariya showed the functioning of machines in the Bamboo technology center. Shri Manoj Ghosh exposed the students and their teachers to latest designs and products of bamboo. In the last Session of workshop Dr. R.N. Pandey threw light on enormous career opportunities in the bamboo sector. He also guided the students about the kind of education that they need for a successful career in bamboo sector.
To guage the overall influence of the workshop on the awareness level of the students two questionnaires, designed by Dr. R.N. Pandey, were filled up by the students. The students participated with enthusiasm in this evaluation program. An analysis of their reponses in pre workshop evaluation and post workshop evaluation indicated a significant increase in their knowledge about bamboo diversity, propagation, cultivation, utilization besides existing career opportunities in the sector. B.C.D.I. also distributed its publications, “Know your Bamboo” and the news letter “The Enquirer” to the participating students and teachers. The publication “know your bamboo” was appreciated due to its multilingual presentation. More events of this kind will go a long way to develop educated human resources turning to bamboo sector for a career for overall upliftment of the bamboo sector.
